Plans which could bring over 7k new homes to Grimsby move to next phase

Plans to submit an ambitious multi-million pound town deal proposal for Greater Grimsby to central government have been approved.

North East Lincolnshire Council has drawn up the proposals that could become the blueprint for how similar towns across the country work with central government on major regeneration projects.

Cabinet members met earlier today to discuss the plans and agreed to submit them to central government.

The aims of the Greater Grimsby project over the next 10 years are:

  • To grow the local economy by than £216-million per year
  • Create up to 5,400 jobs across the Enterprise Zones and other key employment sites
  • Build 7,700 new homes
  • Increase North East Lincolnshire’s contribution to UK plc
  • Transform the ‘place offer’ through the development of a new higher education presence, waterfront housing, cultural and leisure facilities through the redevelopment of historic sites including the Silo at Victoria Mills and the Kasbah at the Port of Grimsby.

The proposed Greater Grimsby town deal will bring together some of the most influential people and organisations with connections to the area to regenerate Great Grimsby and develop the town’s unique maritime heritage.

Council leader Ray Oxby said: “This is our chance to really drive an exciting way forward to put the ‘Great’ back in Grimsby. Let’s grasp it and let’s help deliver it.

“For the last 12 months we’ve been working hard behind the scenes with senior civil servants and overseen by a Board of highly regarded and influential individuals, including David Ross and Lord Kerslake and supported by Engie, ABP and Dong Energy at the very highest levels of their UK organisation.

“Having worked here for a very long time now, I see these momentous times as a once in a lifetime opportunity we must all seize- to do that we need all stakeholders and partners to keep on pressing with intent, with purpose and focus.”
